A Flavorful Collaboration
In the heart of Kuta Utara, Indonesia, Arti Design Studio unveils “The Merlot Pods,” a dessert haven born from the collaboration with Itsumo, a Batam-based soft serve and tart-focused dessert shop. Led by architects Raynaldo Theodore and Natasha Astari, this vibrant space embodies the playful essence and meticulous craftsmanship inherent in Itsumo’s delectable offerings.
Canggu’s Dynamic Streetscape
Situated in Canggu, a locale transitioning from residential to commercial, The Merlot Pods strategically positions itself close to the street with a modest skyline. The neighborhood, bustling with pedestrians heading to the beach or exploring local eateries, serves as the backdrop for this unique culinary destination.
Bold Aesthetics in Red
Drawing inspiration from the prevalent use of clay roof tiles and red bricks in the neighborhood’s architecture, the entire store is adorned in a striking red hue. This not only breaks the linear path of the pedestrian road but also serves as an eye-catching invitation for passersby to pause, immerse themselves in the vibrant streetscape, and step into the enticing world of Itsumo.
Urban Oasis: Blurring Boundaries
The outdoor space extends beyond conventional boundaries, acting as urban furniture where visitors can momentarily escape the hustle and bustle of the street. Enveloped by bamboo plants, this area not only provides a visual buffer but also shields the interior from dust while adding a touch of greenery to the pedestrian experience.
Intersecting Circularity: Innovative Seating
Within the compact interior, an intersecting circular seating arrangement deftly utilizes space, offering diverse seating experiences. These arches create distinct pockets where patrons can engage in conversations or relish moments of solitude, enhancing the overall ambiance of The Merlot Pods.
Adaptive Reuse: Embracing the Existing
Employing the adaptive reuse approach, Arti Design Studio retains the original column and roof structure, preserving the architectural legacy of the site. The existing columns stand gracefully, integrated with a new roof that introduces a circular motif. This intervention not only defines indoor and outdoor spaces but also adds an intriguing layer to the overall spatial experience.
In essence, The Merlot Pods stand as a testament to Arti Design Studio’s ingenuity, seamlessly blending vibrant aesthetics, innovative spatial design, and a nod to the locality’s architectural identity. Itsumo’s delightful offerings find a fitting home in this dessert haven, inviting patrons to indulge in a multisensory experience that goes beyond the realms of taste.
