Situated in Haikou, China, the “Mountain of the Sky” pavilion stands as a distinctive cultural landmark, envisioned as part of Haikou City’s “Pavilions by the Sea” initiative. Crafted by CASE PAVILION architects in collaboration with Juanzhong Bookstore and Yishan Children’s Bookstore, this space offers a unique blend of a coffee shop and library, fostering a sense of intellectual engagement and relaxation for the local community.
A New Urban Landmark
As one of the 16 coastal pavilions initiated by Haikou City in 2021, “Mountain of the Sky” emerges as a striking addition to the northern end of Haikou Bay. Designed by Sou Fujimoto Architects, the pavilion features an undulating ring-shaped roof, creating a seamless connection with its surroundings. Beneath this expansive roof, the coffee shop and library space invites visitors to explore and unwind amidst a blend of architectural innovation and natural beauty.
Embracing Abstract Experiences
The design ethos of “Mountain of the Sky” aims to blur the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces, offering an abstract experience that transcends conventional commercial settings. Through a harmonious interplay of architectural elements, including glass curtain walls and modular furniture, the space seamlessly integrates with the surrounding waterscape and lush gardens of Haikou Bay. Visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in a world where time and space converge, fostering a sense of playful curiosity and relaxation.
Fluid Spatial Dynamics
To preserve the panoramic views and adapt to the pavilion’s undulating roof structure, the architects opted for a free plan layout, minimizing additional walls and maximizing spatial flexibility. The interior design draws inspiration from marine life, with fluid-dynamic forms resembling coral reefs scattered across the seabed. From the spiral-shaped coffee bar to the fluid seating arrangements, every element reflects a sense of fluidity and movement, echoing the dynamic energy of the surrounding environment.
