Located in Istanbul, Turkey, the İşbank Painting Sculpture Museum stands as a testament to architectural restoration and cultural preservation. Crafted by TEGET architects, this project embodies a meticulous approach to revitalizing historical buildings while seamlessly integrating contemporary museum functionalities.

A Century-Old Legacy: Restoration with Responsibility

The project’s core ethos revolves around stewardship of the building’s three lifespans, spanning from the Baudouy Apartment to the 4th Sigorta Han and culminating in the İşbank Painting Sculpture Museum. The primary objective is to safeguard the historical integrity, spatial ambiance, and material essence of the structure while enhancing it with modern museum amenities. Achieving this entails preserving the interconnected rooms and façade while introducing a technologically advanced interior core to accommodate structural and technical requirements without compromising the building’s heritage.

Harmonizing Tradition with Technology

At the heart of the restoration lies the juxtaposition of the original shell with a contemporary core structure. Bathed in natural light, the shell exudes an airy, cubic aesthetic, while the core, illuminated by artificial lighting, offers a stark contrast with its functional efficiency. High, spacious ceilings characterize the shell, adorned with traditional oil paintings, while the core features expansive galleries housing three-dimensional installations and sculptures, adorned with large-scale artworks.

Celebrating Heritage: The Historical Staircase

Central to the project is the preservation of the historical staircase, a tangible link between the building’s past and present. Through meticulous restoration efforts, the staircase’s hand-carved works, concealed beneath layers of paint, are unveiled, offering a glimpse into the structure’s rich historical tapestry. This integration of historical elements within the modern context bridges the gap between tradition and innovation, creating a seamless narrative of architectural evolution.

Multifaceted Functionality: A Museum for the Modern Era

The İşbank Painting Sculpture Museum transcends its role as a mere repository of art, housing a diverse array of facilities, including a museum shop, bookstore, cafe, multi-purpose hall, and management offices. Exhibition areas span multiple floors, interconnected by atriums within the core building, fostering uninterrupted visual experiences for visitors. Situated along the bustling Istiklal Street, the museum maintains its historical significance while embracing its newfound identity as a cultural hub for the city.

A Testament to Cultural Continuity

As the İşbank Painting Sculpture Museum opens its doors to the public, it not only preserves Istanbul’s architectural heritage but also revitalizes its cultural landscape. Through meticulous restoration and thoughtful integration of modern functionalities, TEGET architects have crafted a beacon of heritage conservation and cultural rejuvenation, ensuring that the museum remains a cherished landmark for generations to come.
