Introduction
Daguan Primary School (Xiangfu Branch), operational since September 2023, stands as a pivotal element of the Xiangfu Bridge Historic District Renewal initiative in Gongshu District, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province. Constructed under the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) general contracting framework, the school reflects GOA’s commitment to enriching educational architecture beyond mere functionality.
Design Philosophy
Lead Architect and Senior Principal of GOA, ZHANG Xun, emphasizes the importance of educational spaces as dynamic mediums for rich behaviors. Anchored in the historical context of the site, the design transforms Xiangfu Street into the campus’s central axis, connecting entrances and dividing the school into two clusters – east and west. This thoughtful approach harmonizes with adjacent spatial scales and resonates with a vibrant flow.
Fabric and Scale Harmony
Staggered school volumes, warm-hued white walls, and a fundamental compositional discipline create a harmonious texture. The façade, employing points, lines, and surfaces, establishes a contrast between solidness and void, resulting in a vibrant and melodic image. This design strategy pays homage to the historical ambiance of the surrounding district.
Dynamic Fluidity in Campus Spaces
The central axis serves as a communal corridor, connecting the academic zone to the west and the cultural and sports zone to the east. The academic zone fosters privacy and safety through an enclosed courtyard with undulating terraces, encouraging interaction with nature. The eastern zone, featuring a library, auditorium, cafeteria, gymnasium, and track field, employs a three-dimensional circulation system, forming a cohesive and organic spatial network.
Adaptable Venues for Education and Leisure
The three-dimensional pedestrian system in the cultural and sports zone blurs boundaries between levels, encouraging creative utilization of spaces. Despite limited urban land, Daguan Primary School offers children meandering pathways reminiscent of a delightful park stroll. This design strategy enhances the adaptability of venues for diverse educational and leisure activities.
Radiating Cultural Influences
Beyond its educational value, Daguan Primary School aims to have a broader impact on the cultural fabric of the surrounding area. The design envisions seamless integration with the commercial and waterfront areas through Xiangfu Street, creating a vibrant and comprehensive public space system. The school aspires to be a cultural promoter, preserving and advancing culture through a design deeply rooted in historical context.
Conclusion
Daguan Primary School in Hangzhou stands as a testament to GOA’s dedication to transcending traditional learning spaces. By creating a dynamic spatial hierarchy, fostering a connection with nature, and seamlessly integrating with the historical fabric, the school not only provides an optimal learning environment but also contributes to the cultural and public life of northern Hangzhou. The design’s thoughtful consideration of historical context and its impact on the surrounding urban space make Daguan Primary School a symbol of holistic education and cultural preservation.
