The Gymnasium Beekvliet in Sint-Michielsgestel, Netherlands, has undergone a transformative renovation by MVRDV, breathing new life into this historic institution. The project, completed in 2023, not only modernizes the facility but also adds a vibrant touch, incorporating the essence of its rich history.
A Historic Journey
Originally established as a seminary for priests, Gymnasium Beekvliet later served as an internment camp during World War II. Over the years, it evolved into a modern grammar school. In 2016, MVRDV, in collaboration with Van Boven Architecten, won the competition to revitalize the building, setting the stage for a remarkable transformation.
Facelift and Sustainability
The primary objective of the renovation was to rejuvenate the school, infusing contemporary elements and ensuring sustainability to extend its lifespan. MVRDV aimed not only to create an environment conducive to learning but also to provide additional space for artistic and cultural activities.
Architectural Highlights
The renovation predominantly focused on revitalizing the existing structure to foster a dynamic learning environment. A new auditorium, featuring a tribune, kitchen, and flexible stage, was seamlessly integrated at the front of the building. The redesigned roof structure, extending and lowering, unified the internal circulation in a fluid motion, symbolizing the school’s motto, “Beekvliet Stroomt” (“Beekvliet flows”).
Harmonizing Past and Present
Winy Maas, founding partner of MVRDV, expressed the honor of renovating their old school. The collaborative effort with visual artist Ian Kirkpatrick resulted in murals that encapsulate memories and experiences of current and former students, teachers, and board members. These panoramic paintings on the facade not only narrate the school’s history but also connect it with the broader community.
Artistic Collaboration
Canadian visual artist Ian Kirkpatrick played a pivotal role in designing the facade artwork. The murals serve as a visual narrative, depicting the genesis of the school, its multi-century history, and its profound connections to the local community. The iconographic illustrations bring a contemporary aesthetic to the building while grounding it in its historical context.
Reflecting the Community
The mural positions on the facade were meticulously determined through computer scripting, linking each illustration to its geographical location. This approach ensures that every stroke of the artwork reflects the memories and stories originating from the surrounding area, creating a cohesive narrative within the Gymnasium Beekvliet.
The renovated Gymnasium Beekvliet stands as a harmonious blend of historical significance and modern architectural prowess, providing an inspiring and inclusive space for generations to come.
