In the idyllic countryside of Aveyron, France, Atelier AJO brought to life a dream during the summer of 2020: Le Sauna de Veillac, a participatory project born from a casual conversation at a family dinner. Nestled within the picturesque landscape of Veillac, this small-scale sauna stands as a testament to simplicity and community collaboration.
Sensitivity to Surroundings
Situated on the shores of a tranquil lake amidst verdant meadows and beech forests, Le Sauna de Veillac is delicately integrated into its natural surroundings. Built on light foundations to minimize environmental impact, it respects the fragile ecosystem of the site and can be easily removed without disruption. Rising gracefully from the ground, the sauna’s exterior features charred timber planks, imbuing it with a rustic charm while ensuring durability through the traditional Japanese technique of “Shou Sugi Ban.”
Tranquil Interior
Inside, the sauna provides a serene space for up to four people, meticulously designed to accommodate the human form. Light pine wood evokes a Scandinavian ambiance, offering a warm and inviting atmosphere. A separate access staircase, crafted from polished concrete, serves as an independent element, seamlessly connecting the sauna to the earth below. An oculus opens onto the scenic lake and surrounding woods, fostering a deep connection to nature.
