Nestled within the lush folds of a halfway terrace, The Tent Spa, designed by a21 studio, offers a serene sanctuary within an operating hot spring and mineral resort. Perched on the gentle slopes of a rock hill, overlooking a meandering river, this intimate spa provides an idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding area.

Innovative Design Solutions

Facing intense heat from the West year-round, the site presented a unique challenge for the architects. To combat this, a steep roof with thick thatch was devised, serving as both a shield against sunlight and a seamless integration with the natural landscape. By orienting the slope towards the West, excess heat is deflected, ensuring optimal comfort for guests. Moreover, the roof, propped directly on the ground, doubles as the primary structural element of the building, blurring the boundaries between shelter and landscape.

Indigenous Construction Techniques

The structural integrity of The Tent Spa is reinforced by indigenous building methods, such as mortise and tenon joints, which seamlessly connect the main wooden beams and panels. Local materials, including dry-stacked stones, coconut leaves, and quarried rocks, further enhance the spa’s connection to its surroundings, evoking a sense of harmony and authenticity.

Harmonious Spatial Experience

Divided into two levels, The Tent Spa offers a multi-dimensional sensory experience. The upper floor features a private bedroom adorned with wooden frames and colorful glass, sourced from reclaimed materials. A suspended net adds an element of whimsy, inviting guests to play amidst the airy void. Below, an infinity mineral pool, accompanied by weathered wooden furniture, provides a tranquil space for relaxation, offering panoramic views of the river below.

Revitalizing Abandoned Spaces

Through its extraordinary roof structure and harmonious material palette, The Tent Spa has breathed new life into an abandoned landscape. This architectural gem not only showcases the ingenuity of local construction techniques but also serves as a beacon of inspiration for the surrounding area, blending seamlessly with its natural surroundings while offering a haven of tranquility for weary travelers.

The Tent Spa stands as a testament to the transformative power of design, revitalizing forgotten spaces and celebrating the beauty of simplicity and harmony in architecture.
