Introduction
In 2022, architects from CREUSeCARRASCO Arquitectos and rvr arquitectos embarked on a transformative journey to revitalize the Porto do Son Harbor in A Coruña, Spain. Motivated by conflicting interests such as port traffic, parking issues, and commercial activities, the project aimed to integrate diverse urban and port expectations, reclaiming the 25,843 m² space for the community.
Creating a Harmonious Public Space
By reorganizing access and separating the main road from the waterfront, the project unlocked a vast public area, blending greenery with paved surfaces. This revitalization fostered a renewed connection between the historic town and the harbor, celebrating both old and new elements while transcending mere functional solutions.
Preserving Heritage and Embracing Innovation
Key heritage features like O Cruceiro were restored, serving as an entrance space and scenic viewpoint adorned with trees. Prefabricated walkways repurposed retaining walls, blending tradition with modernity. Urbanization efforts, including paving and tree planting, reimagined the space’s potential, extending the town’s streets to the sea.
Celebrating Local Identity
Materials like rough concrete, stone, and earth were chosen to echo the town’s architectural textures, seamlessly integrating the harbor with its surroundings. Wooden structures near the market paid homage to traditional net dryers, while versatile spaces were designed to accommodate various cultural activities and future endeavors.
Enhancing Recreational Opportunities
The revitalized harbor now boasts expansive surfaces for festivals, blending stone and wooded areas for diverse experiences. A new promenade offers access to pontoons, while thoughtful planning addresses parking needs. Towards the harbor’s edge, a new Nautical Club building serves as a focal point, offering panoramic views of Monte Louro and the Muros-Noia estuary.
Conclusion
The Conditioning of the Harbor of Porto do Son project exemplifies a harmonious blend of urban renewal and port revitalization. By preserving heritage, embracing innovation, and celebrating local identity, CREUSeCARRASCO Arquitectos and rvr arquitectos have transformed Porto do Son Harbor into a vibrant public space that honors the past while embracing the future.
