Situated in Shenzhen Shi, China, KUDDO Coffee, designed by Xushi Design, embodies a fusion of industrial heritage and modern aesthetics. With a total area of 80 square meters, this coffee shop renovation project pays homage to the rugged beauty of the original factory space while infusing it with contemporary elements.

Design Concept

Lead Architect Jiahui Yang’s vision for KUDDO Coffee was rooted in preserving the raw authenticity of the factory area’s unmodified concrete walls and natural patina. The design concept focused on seamlessly integrating modern furnishings with the site’s industrial charm, utilizing metal and cement-style materials alongside retro lighting fixtures. Local military green accents further reinforce the brand’s identity, while industrial pipelines are repurposed as unique lighting installations, adding to the space’s industrial-chic ambiance.

Spatial Transformation

The redesign of KUDDO Coffee includes a striking air duct ceiling that incorporates the original red staircase of the site, coated in silver-white to exude a contemporary metallic sheen. The ground bar, inspired by the site’s concrete material, features a curved design that mirrors the ceiling’s form, creating a cohesive visual language throughout the space. The collision of materials evokes a sense of dynamism, while an irregular opening on the side of the site serves as a playful entrance, marrying industrial remnants with commercial vibrancy.

Maximizing Natural Light

Given the thick walls and lack of windows surrounding the site, maximizing natural light was a design priority. To address this, a large transparent skylight roof was installed, utilizing a steel frame structure and durable transparent panels. This thoughtful addition not only floods the interior with natural light but also enhances the connection to the surrounding environment, fostering a welcoming and airy atmosphere.

Reflecting Modern Urban Spirit

In transforming the industrial space into a contemporary coffee shop, KUDDO Coffee exemplifies the evolving architectural landscape of Shenzhen Shi. By embracing the spirit of the times and repurposing industrial relics into vibrant social spaces, the project celebrates the intersection of modern aesthetics and industrial heritage. KUDDO Coffee not only showcases the enduring charm of industrial aesthetics but also embodies the dynamic urban spirit of modern-day Shenzhen Shi.
