Refurbishment and Urban Planning in Antalya, Turkey (1)

Antalya Konyaalti coastline, stretching over an area of approximately 100 hectares, underwent a significant transformation with the inauguration of its first phase on June 15, 2018. Spearheaded by Ozer\Urger Architects, this project aimed to revitalize the urban landscape in collaboration with Tugay Architects.

Project Overview

The project, encompassing various zones such as the Mediterranean Avenue, Museum Square, Beachpark, and Olbia Square, aimed to mitigate the impact of the highway that once divided the coast and the settlement behind it.

Enhancing Connectivity and Livability

The primary objective was to create thematic focal points along the coast, fostering a more diverse urban environment. This included enhancing the connection between residential neighborhoods and the coastline while providing ample recreational, cultural, and sporting amenities for residents.

Pedestrian-Friendly Design

The project emphasized pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, along with improved public transport and bicycle facilities. Architectural proposals focused on creating accessible and inviting spaces for users of all abilities. Urban landscape elements were modularly designed to serve various functions, including seating, shading, and recreational activities.

Mediterranean Avenue

The Mediterranean Avenue, despite heavy traffic, emerged as a vital recreational area following the rehabilitation project. By narrowing the road and reorganizing parking lots, traffic flow was optimized, transforming the avenue into a more pedestrian-friendly route. Green corridors were extended to the shore, enhancing the overall aesthetics and ecological balance.

Museum Square

Museum Square serves as the gateway to the coastline for the citizens of Antalya. The urban renewal project aimed to integrate the square with the adjacent museum garden, while also redesigning the viewing platform to offer panoramic views of the coastline.

Beachpark

Beachpark, a bustling hub along the coastline, underwent significant improvements. The project proposed smaller kiosks to replace outdated commercial booths, fostering a better connection between the grove and the coast. Accessibility was enhanced with the addition of elevators, portable wooden paths, and increased greenery.

Olbia Square

Olbia Square, situated on Dumlupinar Avenue, was reimagined as a vibrant city square offering a range of sports, entertainment, and cultural activities. The introduction of interactive water features and multipurpose sports fields aimed to create a dynamic urban space for all age groups.

The Antalya Konyaalti coastline rehabilitation project stands as a testament to innovative urban planning, revitalizing the coastal landscape while promoting connectivity, livability, and sustainability.
