The Afghan Bazaar Cultural Precinct in Dandenong, Melbourne, Australia, celebrates the vibrant Afghan businesses that thrive in the area. With significant investments from the City of Greater Dandenong and the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship, the precinct aims to foster community pride and unity.
A Symbolic Urban Streetscape
Designed by HASSELL, the precinct features an urban streetscape that reflects the diverse cultures of the local Afghan community. Through intensive community consultation facilitated by Sinatra Murphy, the design incorporates community-endorsed themes such as artistic expression, the color blue, a centrepiece, and celebration.
Bridging Cultures through Design
The design process focused on understanding the cultural requirements of the community, leading to the creation of custom seating inspired by traditional Arabic ‘suffah’ or dais. Drawing inspiration from the intricate tiling of Mazar-e-Sharif (Blue Mosque), the design incorporates abstracted geometries and vibrant blue hues to define gathering spaces.
Revitalizing Public Spaces
Thomas Street has been reconfigured to provide more gathering space for community events and festivals. Narrowed roadways and widened footpaths, along with improved lighting and landscaping, contribute to the activation of the precinct and enhance its accessibility.
A Captivating Centrepiece
At the heart of the precinct stands an integrated artwork titled ‘Lamp’ by Afghan-Australian artist Aslam Akram. Symbolizing human energy, knowledge, and cultural exchange, Lamp serves as a focal point for the community, both day and night.
Promoting Social Encounters
The Afghan Bazaar Cultural Precinct recognizes the importance of social and cultural encounters in daily life. By celebrating cultural and artistic expression, the precinct transforms the street into a vibrant and inclusive space for all members of the community.
