In 2023, a significant transformation unfolded along the Calderitas Boardwalk in Chetumal, Mexico, led by the architectural prowess of a|911. Spanning an expansive area of 32500 m², this project aimed to redefine public spaces and integrate diverse activities into a cohesive urban landscape.
Concept and Integration
Aligned with the national territorial planning strategy championed by SEDATU, the renovation sought to weave together various activities along the boardwalk. A central axis served as the guiding thread, seamlessly blending the gastronomic area with the natural and artificial sea. A structured walkway system was devised, enabling pedestrians to traverse the water safely while integrating the bustling gastronomic scene with the scenic waterfront.
Mobility and Accessibility
Prioritizing pedestrian and cyclist mobility, the project underwent significant adjustments to enhance accessibility. Traffic flow was streamlined to a single direction, with streets narrowed to a single lane. Expanded sidewalks and bike lanes, along with strategically placed bollards, ensured the safety of both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. New intersections were seamlessly integrated, harmonizing vehicular circulation with the revitalized urban space.
Gastronomic Transformation
The gastronomic spaces along the beachfront underwent a revitalization, culminating in the creation of a grand gastronomic square. Elevated platforms integrated with natural pools and restaurants offered visitors an immersive dining experience amidst breathtaking coastal views. Contemplative spaces, carefully nestled within the existing mangrove barrier, provided tranquil retreats while preserving the site’s ecological integrity.
Iconic Features
Central to the project’s identity is the 15-meter observation tower, offering panoramic vistas of the turquoise sea and picturesque sunsets. Designed as a triangular column enveloped in a porous wooden skin, the tower stands as an architectural marvel, providing safe and captivating viewpoints at various heights.
Urban Aesthetics and Materiality
Drawing inspiration from local elements, the project’s urban image showcases a harmonious blend of colors and textures. Treated zapote wood, site-specific stone, and concrete infused with local minerals form the foundation of the project’s aesthetic. The pavement design, adorned with ochre and sand shades, complements the natural surroundings, while carefully curated plant species enhance the site’s identity and biodiversity.
In essence, the revitalization of the Calderitas Boardwalk exemplifies a|911’s commitment to innovative urban design, sustainability, and community engagement. As Chetumal’s urban landscape evolves, this transformative project stands as a testament to the harmonious integration of nature, culture, and urban life.
