In 2023, LEL DESIGN STUDIO undertook the transformation of the Gaobei Community Neighborhood Center in Chengdu, China, revitalizing a neglected space and fostering community engagement. This project, spanning an area of 1200 m², breathed new life into an abandoned real estate sales office, infusing it with purpose and vibrancy.

Renewal Initiative

Originally serving as a real estate sales office, the site lay dormant for nearly a decade, succumbing to neglect and disuse. Despite its ample size and verdant surroundings, the space remained inaccessible and plagued by issues such as dampness and mosquito breeding. The renovation aimed to address these challenges while creating a hub tailored to the needs of the community.

Tailored Design Approach

LEL DESIGN STUDIO adopted a meticulous approach, conducting a comprehensive survey of the urban landscape and community preferences. The goal was to craft a neighborhood center that seamlessly integrated into daily life, fostering inclusivity and openness.

Conceptual Framework

The design concept centered around two key elements: the “Forest Green Island” and the “Community Living Room.” These components catered to diverse community needs while harnessing the natural surroundings. The Community Living Room, affectionately dubbed the “Gaobei Living Room” by residents, emerged as a central gathering space enveloped by lush greenery, facilitating various public activities.

Dynamic Community Hub

The Community Living Room quickly became a focal point for weekly events, including performances, concerts, sports activities, and movie screenings. Its oval shape and natural surroundings created an inviting ambiance, encouraging community interaction and engagement.

Green Activity Spaces

The Forest Green Island repurposed abandoned model houses, incorporating commercial and service elements to serve the community. By retaining existing trees and enhancing the environmental landscape, the space provided diverse activity areas for residents, promoting health and well-being.

Service-Centric Design

Anticipating future use as a service center, the facade underwent renovation to enhance light introduction and interface transparency. This thoughtful approach aimed to optimize functionality while maintaining aesthetic appeal.

Community Empowerment

In summary, the Gaobei Community Neighborhood Center project exemplifies the power of community renewal. Beyond physical transformation, it symbolizes a commitment to public participation and the cultivation of community spirit. By adapting to local needs and revitalizing neglected spaces, the project fosters a sense of belonging and ownership among residents, enriching the social fabric of Chengdu.
