Reimagining Urban Mobility
In the bustling metropolis of Mumbai, reconciling the needs of mobility, infrastructure, and open spaces is crucial for fostering livable urban environments. One Green Mile, a pioneering “Complete Street” initiative situated in Mumbai’s financial district, exemplifies the transformative power of reimagining vehicular-dominated corridors into vibrant public spaces.
A Vision for Inclusivity
Spanning a 1.8km stretch along Senapati Bapat Marg (SBM), One Green Mile tackles the challenge of revitalizing a heavily trafficked thoroughfare, catering to diverse user needs. By fostering collaboration between key stakeholders, including Nucleus Office Parks (NOP) and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), StudioPOD spearheaded a multi-year endeavor to craft a masterplan that prioritizes inclusivity and community engagement.
Balancing Mobility and Public Realm
Thorough analysis and stakeholder consultations informed the project’s approach, which aimed to accommodate pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles while enhancing the public realm. Innovative solutions, such as reclaiming road space for wider sidewalks and cycle tracks, were implemented to streamline traffic flow and create inviting public spaces. The introduction of local greenery, street furniture, and permeable pavement materials not only beautifies the streetscape but also mitigates urban heat island effects and improves air quality.
Revitalizing Underutilized Spaces
Underutilized areas beneath flyovers were transformed into vibrant community hubs, such as the newly christened ‘Parel Baug.’ These spaces now feature cultural amenities like study centers and flexible play areas, fostering a sense of community cohesion and cultural enrichment. Curated public art celebrates the area’s heritage, infusing the space with local identity and storytelling.
Fostering Collaboration for Urban Thriving
By reclaiming 2.3 acres of public realm, introducing modular bus stops, and adding greenery, One Green Mile demonstrates the potential of collaborative urban design to enhance public life and commuter experiences. With a daily footfall of over 150,000 individuals, this project showcases the transformative impact of placemaking and landscape urbanism in creating vibrant, inclusive urban environments.
