Bridging City and Fjord
The master plan for Aalborg Waterfront Phase II, crafted by C.F. Møller, seeks to forge a seamless connection between the historic heart of Aalborg and its waterfront, a link long hindered by industrial barriers and bustling traffic. Embracing the city’s heritage while embracing its scenic fjord, the project transforms what was once a neglected backdrop into a vibrant urban frontage.
Building on Success
Following the triumph of Phase I, realized between 2004 and 2013, the second phase builds upon its predecessor’s accomplishments. Collaborating with Vibeke Rønnow Landscape Architects, C.F. Møller Landscape continues its innovative approach, anchored by the iconic Aalborg House of Music designed by Coop Himmelblau.
Promenade and Plinth: Unifying Elements
Central to the Phase II design is the continuation of the waterfront promenade, now conceived as a “marsh,” seamlessly blending with a gently curving plinth. This elevated platform serves as a unifying foundation for the area’s architectural ensemble, echoing the undulating contours of coastal dunes.
Urban Resilience and Functionality
Beyond aesthetics, the plinth serves a critical function, providing flood protection while carving out sheltered spaces for social interaction. Cascading steps along its sides offer seating areas shielded from the wind, fostering moments of repose amidst the bustling waterfront.
Green Spaces and Native Plantings
Interspersed within the promenade are spacious plazas enveloped by verdant greenery, featuring native trees, shrubs, and grasses typical of North Jutland’s fjord landscape. These lush oases invite residents and visitors alike to unwind amidst nature’s embrace.
Materials and Aesthetic Harmony
Echoing the ethos of Phase I, the design embraces a harmonious blend of materials. While the plinth surrounding Musikkens Hus exudes elegance with its refined finishes, other areas feature raw and elemental textures, from asphalt to concrete, grounding the waterfront in its industrial heritage.
Conclusion
Aalborg Waterfront Phase II represents a visionary synthesis of urban design and natural beauty, breathing new life into Aalborg’s waterfront while honoring its rich heritage. With its inviting promenades, dynamic plazas, and resilient infrastructure, the project exemplifies a harmonious coexistence between city and nature, inviting all to partake in its beauty and vitality.
